The Number One Question I Get Asked Before Every Session

It comes in almost every single inquiry message, right after "what are your rates" and "are you available on our date."

"What should we wear?"

And honestly I love this question because it tells me the family is invested. They are thinking ahead, they want these photos to be beautiful, and they care about getting it right. So let me give you the answer I give every family I photograph along 30A, Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Destin, Miramar Beach, and Panama City Beach... the complete, real, no fluff guide to what actually works on the Emerald Coast.

The Golden Rule of Beach Session Outfits

Before we talk about specific pieces, here is the most important thing to understand about dressing for a Gulf Coast beach session. The goal is not to match perfectly. The goal is to coordinate intentionally.

Look at the session that inspired this guide. Mom wore a bold cobalt blue off the shoulder dress. Dad was in a relaxed white button down with dark shorts. The teen boys wore casual button downs and neutral shorts. And the little one wore a bright floral romper that pulled color from mom's dress without being matchy matchy.

The result was a family that looked cohesive, colorful, and completely themselves against that dramatic Emerald Coast sky. That is exactly what you are aiming for.

What Works Beautifully on the Gulf Coast

The emerald green and turquoise water of the Gulf of Mexico is your backdrop and your best friend when it comes to outfit planning. Colors that pop against that water and the warm golden hour sky are always a winning choice.

Blues in any shade from navy to cobalt to dusty blue photograph incredibly well against both the water and the sand. Whites and creams glow in the golden hour light and feel fresh and timeless. Earthy tones like terracotta, rust, sage, and tan complement the sand and create a warm organic feel. Soft pinks and corals are beautiful especially for women and girls and feel very much at home on the Emerald Coast. Bold accent colors like the cobalt blue in this session are stunning when used intentionally as the statement piece for one family member while others stay more neutral around them.

What to Avoid

Neon colors and busy patterns can compete with the natural environment and pull attention away from the faces and connection between your family members. Solid black clothing tends to absorb heat and can look heavy in beachy golden hour light. Overly formal clothing like suits and stiff dress clothes can make a beach session feel awkward and uncomfortable. And please... leave the matching white shirts and khaki shorts combinations to another decade. You deserve better than that and so do your photos.

My Top Tips for Gulf Coast Beach Session Outfits

Start with one statement piece and build around it. In this session that was mom's cobalt blue dress. Everything else coordinated with it without competing. Pick your statement piece first and then find pieces for everyone else that complement rather than match it exactly.

Layer your tones from bold to neutral. One or two people can wear the bold statement colors while the others stay in softer neutrals. This creates visual interest without chaos.

Choose comfort over perfection every single time. The best beach session photos happen when everyone feels relaxed and natural. A dress you can barely walk in or shoes that sink in the sand will show up in your body language and your face. Dress comfortably and the photos will reflect that.

Bring a backup option. Especially for kids. Accidents happen, waves happen, and having an extra outfit in the bag means nothing derails your session.

Consider the water. If there is any chance we might get in the water during your session, which I almost always recommend, make sure the outfits can handle it. Flowing maxi dresses in the water create some of the most stunning images I have ever captured. See the beautiful examples from this session as proof.
