30A Extended Family Beach Session

This is one of my absolute favorite types of sessions to photograph on 30A. Extended family sessions are different from a typical family shoot, they are bigger, louder, more chaotic, and a hundred times more meaningful. You have grandparents who are watching their grandbabies run in the surf. Parents who finally get a quiet moment together while grandma has the littles. Cousins who haven't seen each other since last summer. And a whole crew of people who love each other, standing together on the most beautiful water in the country.

I'm Lisa Marie, your 30A Beach Photographer, and I have been capturing extended family sessions along the Gulf Coast for over a decade. Here is a look inside this gorgeous Santa Rosa Beach session and everything you need to know about booking your own.

When grandma books the beach house and the whole family shows up this is what happens. Three generations, one golden-hour sunset, and a session that captures every relationship in your family exactly as it is right now.

THE WHOLE CREW

When Everyone Shows Up Together

We started with what I always call the "controlled chaos" shot getting every single person together on the Gulf at the same time. Eight people, three generations, the waves rolling in behind them, and that wide open 30A sky overhead. This is the shot grandma frames above the fireplace. This is the one that goes on the Christmas card. And this is the one that is going to matter the most twenty years from now.

One of the things I love most about this session is the coordinating outfits. The women wore flowing pastel tie-dye maxi dresses in soft lavender, green, and white and rather than matching exactly, they all complemented each other beautifully. The result is cohesive without feeling stiff or overdone. It is the kind of outfit coordination that photographs like a dream against the turquoise Gulf water and golden-hour light.

An extended family beach session doesn’t just give you a photo. It gives you the whole story of your family, every relationship, every connection... exactly as it is right now.
GRANDPARENT PORTRAITS

After we get the big group shots, I love to break everyone into smaller combinations. The grandparent portraits are always the ones that stop people in their tracks. There is something so pure about watching grandparents hold the hands of their grandchildren and capturing that moment on the most beautiful beach in Florida is something truly special.

The Shots That Make Grandma Cry Every Time

On the left, grandma and grandpa walking the shoreline hand in hand with all three grandkids, two little girls in matching mermaid dresses and their little brother in his blue polo. On the right, the grandparents with their grown daughters, all three in coordinating tie-dye, laughing together with the Gulf rolling in behind them.

These are the images that get printed and hung in the hallway. These are the ones that get pulled out at graduation parties and weddings. Book the session. You will never regret having these photos. I promise you that.

JUST THE CHILDREN

Pure Magic Every Single Time

I never skip the children-only shots. There is something absolutely magical about stepping back and letting the kids just be kids on the beach, no adults in the frame, just three little cousins holding hands and walking along the water's edge with the biggest smiles you have ever seen.

These three in their coordinating mermaid print dresses and their little guy in his blue Ralph Lauren polo, they absolutely owned the beach that evening. The light, the smiles, the way they held each other's hands without being asked. This is why I do what I do.

THE UNPLANNED MOMENTS

Silly Moments Nobody Planned But Everyone Keeps Forever

I never skip the children-only shots. There is something absolutely magical about stepping back and letting the kids just be kids on the beach, no adults in the frame, just three little cousins holding hands and walking along the water's edge with the biggest smiles you have ever seen.

This. RIGHT HERE. Nobody planned this. Nobody posed this. The girls just started squishing their little cousin's face and the result is one of the most genuinely precious images from the entire session. His expression is absolutely priceless.

This is exactly why I always tell families, the best shots are not the perfectly posed ones. They are the in-between moments, the real ones, the ones where somebody does something completely unexpected and I just happen to be right there with my camera.

PARENTS GET THEIR MOMENT TOO

Because You Deserve to Be in the Frame

One of the things I make sure to do in every extended family session is carve out time for just the parents. Moms and dads spend so much of their lives behind the camera that they forget they deserve to be IN the photos too. This couple on the 30A shoreline at golden hour…the way he looks at her, the way she's laughing…this is exactly what a marriage looks like on the Gulf Coast at sunset.
