The Best Time of Year for Beach Photos on 30A
(A Month-by-Month Guide from a Local Photographer)
If you have ever tried to Google the best time to visit 30A, you will find a lot of generic travel answers. But if you are trying to figure out the best time for beautiful, relaxed family beach photos on 30A…that's a different question entirely. And it's one I can actually answer!
I'm a local 30A family photographer, and I've photographed families on these beaches in every single month of the year… at sunrise, at golden hour, in the heat of August and the quiet of January. I know how the light falls differently at Rosemary Beach versus Seaside, and I know exactly which months give you the softest skies and the calmest kids.
This guide breaks it all down for you: temperatures, sunrise times, crowd levels, and my honest photographer's take on every month. Bookmark it, save it to Pinterest, and come back to it when you're planning your trip.
Why Timing Your 30A Beach Session Actually Matters
Most families don't realize that the time of year and even the time of day can completely change how your photos look and feel. Here's what actually shifts month to month on 30A:
Light quality: Summer light is harsh mid-day but gorgeous at golden hour. Winter and spring light is softer all morning long.
Wind: Late spring and fall tend to have the calmest water and the least wind which means easier sessions with little ones and prettier hair for everyone.
Crowds: Peak season (June–July) means more people on the beach during your session. Shoulder months give you that wide-open, "beach belongs to us" feeling.
Temperature for kids: Little ones do best when it's not scorching. Sunrise sessions in summer and any session in fall or spring tend to be the most comfortable for small kids.
30A Sunrise Times by Month
(Why I Recommend Sunrise Sessions)
One of the questions I get most often is "should we do sunrise or sunset?" Here's my honest answer: if you have young kids or sensitive eyes, sunrise is almost always better. The beach is empty, the water is calm, the light is soft, and kids are still in that sweet sleepy-happy mood before the day wears them out.
Here are the approximate sunrise times for 30A throughout the year (best light begins 20–30 minutes before sunrise):
January: 6:35–7:05 AM
February: 6:20–6:55 AM
March: 5:45–6:30 AM
April: 6:10–6:45 AM
May: 5:45–6:30 AM
June: 5:40–6:25 AM
July: 5:50–6:35 AM
August: 6:05–6:45 AM
September: 6:20–7:00 AM
October: 6:35–7:10 AM
November: 6:00–6:40 AM
December: 6:20–6:55 AM
Month-by-Month Guide to 30A Beach Photography
January on 30A (Avg High: 62°F / Low: 46°F)
January is quiet and beautiful. The crowds are gone, the light is incredibly soft, and you get the beach almost entirely to yourself. It's chilly — you'll want layers but for families who don't mind the cold, this is a hidden gem month. Great for moody, editorial-style photos.
February on 30A (Avg High: 65°F / Low: 49°F)
Still quiet, still gorgeous. February starts to warm slightly and the days get longer. One of my personal favorite months for photography because the light is so dreamy and soft all morning long. Ideal for families who want an intimate, uncrowded session.
March on 30A (Avg High: 70°F / Low: 61°F)
March is one of my top picks. The weather is gorgeous, crowds haven't hit yet, and the water starts looking that stunning emerald-green color that 30A is known for. Spring break brings some activity mid-month, but early March is perfection.
April on 30A (Avg High: 76°F / Low: 61°F)
April is arguably the sweet spot. Warm enough to be comfortable in swimsuits, not so hot that kids are miserable, and the beach is still relatively uncrowded. The light is soft and golden at both sunrise and golden hour. Book early, April fills up fast.
May on 30A (Avg High: 83°F / Low: 69°F)
May is one of my absolute favorites for family sessions. It's warm but not yet peak-summer humid, the water is beautiful, and you're just ahead of the summer crowd surge. Sunrise sessions in May are magical… calm water, glowing skies, happy kids.
June on 30A (Avg High: 88°F / Low: 75°F)
June is peak season, the beach is busy and the heat is real. But that doesn't mean bad photos! Sunrise sessions in June are stunning because you're out there before the crowds arrive and the light is that soft peachy-pink perfection. Just plan to be done before 8 AM.
July on 30A (Avg High: 90°F / Low: 77°F)
July is the hottest and busiest month. Sessions are absolutely still possible and beautiful, but I always recommend sunrise and I mean early. The beach fills up quickly and the heat sets in fast. If you're visiting in July, book your session first thing when you schedule your trip.
August on 30A (Avg High: 90°F / Low: 77°F)
August mirrors July in heat, but something magical happens around late August families start heading home and the beach gets noticeably calmer. Sunrise sessions are still the move, but if you're visiting late August, golden hour becomes more doable as the crowds thin.
September on 30A (Avg High: 87°F / Low: 74°F)
September is a sleeper hit. The water is still warm and that gorgeous turquoise color, the crowds have thinned dramatically, and the light starts getting that soft fall quality. It's one of the best-kept secrets on 30A. Late September is particularly special.
October on 30A (Avg High: 80°F / Low: 64°F)
October might be my single favorite month for photography on 30A. The light is incredible…golden and warm all morning long. Temps are perfect for families with young kids. The beach is quiet. The water is still beautiful. If you can make it work, October is the one.
November on 30A (Avg High: 72°F / Low: 55°F)
November is quiet and cool… a beautiful time for families who want an uncrowded beach and don't mind a light jacket. The light is soft and moody, perfect for cozy, natural family moments. Great for families who aren't after the "bright summer beach" look.
December on 30A (Avg High: 65°F / Low: 49°F)
December is chilly but absolutely stunning. The beach is peaceful, the light is soft and dreamy, and there's something really special about a winter beach session. Great for families visiting over the holidays who want to capture this memory in a unique, beautiful way.
Quick Tips for Every Season
Save this post for your trip planning and share it with whoever is helping you plan your 30A vacation — they'll thank you later.
Summer (June–August): Always sunrise. Bring water, sunscreen, and plan to be done before the heat sets in. Light, flowy outfits photograph beautifully in soft morning light.
Spring & Fall (March–May, September–November): The golden window. Either sunrise or golden hour works beautifully. These are the easiest, most relaxed sessions…great for first-timers.
Winter (December–February): Layer up! Bring a light blanket or jacket for in-between shots. The light is gorgeous and the beach is all yours.
