Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I choose a Sunrise Session?
Sunrise is hands down the most underrated session I offer, and the families who book it almost always say they wish they had done it sooner. The beach is completely empty. No crowds, no strangers walking through your frame, no competing noise. The air is cool and comfortable, which means kids are at their best and nobody is sweating through their outfits. The light moves through warm gold, soft peach, and pastel coastal blues all in one session, giving you a gallery with more color variety than any other time of day. With 10+ years of shooting along the Emerald Coast, I know exactly where to position your family at each beach to catch the best of that light. If you are on the fence between sunrise and sunset, come look at both galleries and then decide. DM me SUNRISE to see what dates are open during your trip.
How long does a Sunrise Session last?
Sunrise Sessions run 40 to 60 minutes, and every minute counts. We start right as the sky begins to color and work through the full arc of the light as the sun climbs above the horizon. I know the timing at each beach along the 30A corridor whether we are at Rosemary Beach, WaterColor, Seagrove Beach, or Inlet Beach and I plan the pacing so we are never rushing and never wasting the best light. The gradual color shift gives us natural variety without having to move locations, which keeps the session relaxed and the kids engaged.
How many images will we receive from our Sunrise Session?
Your gallery includes 40 to 60 fully edited digital images with a print release. Sunrise tends to produce beautiful color variety across the session…warm tones early, soft pastels as the sun rises, airy coastal light toward the end so your gallery covers a wide aesthetic range within a single session. Every image is edited in my signature natural style, and your gallery is delivered through Pic-Time within two weeks of your session.
Who is the Sunrise Session best for?
Sunrise is genuinely great for almost every family, but it is especially perfect for a few specific situations. If you have toddlers, sunrise wins every time…they wake up happy, the beach is calm and empty, and there are zero meltdown triggers. If your family runs hot or you are visiting during peak summer, the cool morning air makes a huge difference in how everyone feels and looks on camera. Families staying in Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, WaterColor, WaterSound Beach, Seagrove Beach, and Blue Mountain Beach love sunrise because those beaches are particularly peaceful in the early morning before the day crowds arrive. Multi-generational groups and grandparents often prefer sunrise for the same reason, it is relaxed, unhurried, and genuinely enjoyable.
What does the sunrise light look like in photos?
The light at sunrise moves through three distinct phases, and all three are beautiful. When we start, the sky is soft and warm with a peachy golden glow that wraps around faces like a filter you could never recreate in editing. As the sun climbs, it transitions into soft pastels like pinks, soft corals, hazy blues before settling into the clean, airy coastal light that makes 30A beach portraits so recognizable. One thing I love specifically about sunrise is that there is almost no wind that early, which means flowy dresses, hair, and light fabrics photograph without the distraction you sometimes get later in the day. The result is a gallery that feels calm, editorial, and genuinely timeless.
Can we add grandparents or extended family members?
Yes. The Sunrise Session includes up to six people in the base price, and additional family members are $50 per person with no hard cap on group size. Sunrise is actually one of my favorite sessions for larger multigenerational families because the beach is quiet and uncrowded, which makes managing a big group so much easier. If you are planning a large extended family session along 30A, mention it when you reach out so I can plan the location and pacing accordingly.
How far in advance should we book a Sunrise Session?
As early as you can. Sunrise is limited to one session per morning, and peak travel weeks along 30A, spring break, summer, and fall book out fast. If your travel dates are already set, the best move is to reach out the moment your trip is confirmed. Many families make sunrise their annual 30A vacation tradition and rebook before they even leave the beach. DM me SUNRISE to check what is open during your trip.
Is it really worth waking up that early?
Every single family who has ever dragged themselves out of bed for a sunrise session has told me afterward that it was worth it. Every one. The beach belongs to you at that hour. The light is soft and forgiving and genuinely cinematic in a way that is hard to describe until you see your gallery. Kids who are grumpy by afternoon are usually happy and energetic first thing in the morning. And because sessions run 40 to 60 minutes, you are back at your rental in time for breakfast. I have been shooting sunrise sessions along the Emerald Coast for over a decade, and I have never had a family walk away disappointed.
Where do you shoot Sunrise Sessions on 30A?
I photograph all along the 30A and Emerald Coast corridor and will recommend the best location based on where you are staying. Families in Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach have access to that iconic white architecture backdrop alongside the Gulf, which is especially beautiful in early morning light. WaterColor and WaterSound Beach offer wide, quiet shoreline with incredible dune access and almost no foot traffic at sunrise. Grayton Beach and Blue Mountain Beach have dramatic natural landscape that photographs beautifully in morning light. Seaside, Seagrove Beach, and Gulf Place offer a classic coastal feel with open shoreline and easy access. I know the parking, access points, and crowd patterns at every single one of these beaches, and I use that knowledge to put your family in exactly the right spot.
Q10: What should we wear for a Sunrise Session?
Sunrise light is soft and slightly cooler in tone than sunset, which means the same outfit rules apply but with a slight shift. Soft, airy fabrics in cream, white, blush, light sage, and soft blue tones all photograph beautifully. Flowy dresses are especially stunning at sunrise because the wind is minimal and the light wraps around movement in a way that feels editorial and effortless. I send every client a full style guide after booking with specific guidance for their family's look. If you are staying in WaterColor or Rosemary Beach, I can also point you toward local shops that carry the kinds of looks that photograph beautifully in coastal morning light.
What happens if it is cloudy or overcast on my sunrise morning?
Overcast mornings are actually some of my favorite sessions to shoot. Cloud cover creates soft, even, diffused light that is incredibly flattering on every skin tone and eliminates harsh shadows entirely. Some of my most beautiful sunrise galleries came from mornings that looked gray on paper. If there is actual rain or lightning, I will work with you to reschedule to another morning during your trip. I monitor conditions closely and communicate early so you are never standing on the beach wondering what to do.
Do you shoot Sunrise Sessions at Destin and Panama City Beach?
Yes. While my home base is Santa Rosa Beach and most sessions run along the 30A corridor, I photograph sunrise sessions in Destin, Miramar Beach, and Panama City Beach by request. Destin's Henderson Beach State Park is especially beautiful at sunrise and stays quiet well into the morning. Panama City Beach sessions are booked based on availability. DM me SUNRISE with your location and I will let you know what dates are open.
