Extended Family Beach Photos on 30A: Becky's Family, All These Years Later

An extended family beach photography session on 30A is what happens when a big family, a golden hour, and years of history all show up on the same stretch of sand at once. That's exactly what happened when I photographed Becky's family this year, and it might be my favorite kind of session to shoot.
I've photographed Becky's family for years, going all the way back to when her oldest granddaughter was just a little thing. Back then I was still working out of Oklahoma. She messaged me in March because the whole crew was coming to Florida, and they wanted family pictures while everyone was finally together, plus a way to celebrate Becky and her husband's wedding anniversary. So my old Oklahoma photography life met my Florida photography life again, this time right here on the beach.
The Gulf Showed Off That Night
Can we talk about what the Gulf decided to do for us? That sky. Those colors. The reflections stretching across the wet sand like the whole beach was in on it. After 10+ years photographing sunsets along this coast, I still stop and stare when it does that. This is exactly why I've fallen in love with extended family beach sessions on 30A. You get the golden hour, the family, and every so often, a sky that steals the whole show.
What an Extended Family Beach Photography Session on 30A Actually Includes
If you're picturing one stiff group photo with 15 people squinting into the sun, that's not what this looks like. Yes, we get the big family portrait. But we also break everybody down into the smaller relationships that actually make up a family:

That's the part I love most about extended family sessions. We're not spending the whole time trying to get one giant group to smile at the camera at once. There are so many different relationships inside one family, and I want to photograph all of them, not just the version where everyone's lined up by height.
Becky's Custom Family Package: 90 Photos... Turned Into 190
Early evening sessions are a great option for families who want that golden warmth
Becky's crew needed something a little different, so I built her a custom package with 90 images. Then I finished editing.
There were 190.
Whoops. When a family gives you that many good relationships to work with, apparently I don't know how to stop. So her gallery went out with all 190 images for the family to look through and choose their favorite 90, with the option to purchase the rest if narrowing it down proved impossible. Considering how this session went, I had a feeling narrowing it down wasn't going to be easy for them.

Book Your Photographer Before You Book the Rest of the Trip
Here's a tip if you're planning an extended family vacation: book your photographer before the trip, not once you're already there. Coordinating one evening when 10 or more people are all free at the same time can turn into its own event, especially once dinner reservations, nap schedules, and everyone's individual plans get stacked on top of it. Locking in your session date early means it's one less thing to negotiate once you're all together and just want to enjoy the trip.

How far in advance should we book an extended family beach photography session?
As early as possible, ideally before you even finalize the rest of your trip. Coordinating a shared evening for 10 or more family members gets harder the closer you get to your vacation dates, and popular sunset time slots book out weeks in advance during peak season.
How many photos will we receive from an extended family session?
It depends on your package size and family. Standard sessions include a set number of edited images (see current packages here), and larger or multi-generational families can request a custom package built around how many individual groupings they want covered.
Do you offer custom packages for large or multi-generational families?
Yes. Extended family sessions often need more coverage than a standard package because there are so many smaller groupings inside one big family (grandparents, individual families, couples, kids). I build custom packages regularly for exactly this reason.
What's the best time of day for a large family beach photo session?
Sunrise or early evening. The light is soft and directional, the beach is far less crowded, and it gives a big group room to spread out without fighting midday sun or a packed shoreline.
Can you photograph a family reunion or multi-family group on the beach?
Absolutely, this is one of my favorite session types. Multi-family reunions and extended family sessions let us capture the full range of relationships within a family, not just one posed group shot.
